Silent and powerful particle filter for sump systems

Version 2012-IX

C.A.S.T. - New approach to particle filtration in reefkeeping

Silent and powerful particle filter for sump systems

Advanced trapping of mainly particulate organic matter (POM) is almost not considered in daily reefkeeping practice. Nevertheless, the powerful pre-filtration makes seawater not only crystal clear, but also reduces the amount of biologically decomposable matter in the system and subsequently lowers substantially the pollution of seawater by ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, phosphates and other unwanted compounds.

Key advantages:

C.A.S.T. consists of following parts:

  • Easy assembling and maintenance
  • See-through design for quick check
  • Silent operation
  • Selectable filtration grade
  • Fit-up washable filtration materials
  • Multi-purpose adjustable holder
  • Multi-purpose plug-in chamber
  • Removable ladder with 2 filtration pads
  • 2 pieces of 100% cotton gloves
  • Operating instructions

Optional accessories available.

Purpose of Prefiltration - Example:

Even a part of POM is being removed by skimming in almost all reef tanks the role of prefiltration is irreplaceable:

POM

Let’s say the production of POM (Particulate Organic Matter) in average tank is 5 - 20 µg / l / day and let’s suppose 500 l tank with return pump of 2.500 l/h flow rate. This results in following:

Time period

Volume of water
passing through filter [l]

Volume of tank
exchanged

POM produced [g]

Daily 60.000 120 x 2.5 – 10
Weekly 420.000 840 x 17.5 – 70
Monthly 1.825.000 3.650 x 532 – 2.129

Without any prefiltration, up to 2 kilograms of POM will each month:

  • Partially decompose and pollute the tank with ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, phosphates and other dissolved unwanted matter. This situation requires powerful nitrification-denitrification technology and intensive phosphate removal
  • Partially create sediments which could initiate unwanted anaerobic processes in “dead” zones of the tank
  • Lower the transmission of light through water, affecting negatively coral photosynthesis

Multi-purpose Holder & Chamber

Multi-purpose adjustable holder

1 - Sump mount arms

Allow holder vertical adjustment 0 - 15 cm in five 3 cm steps. Each arm is mounted on the holder by means of 2 dogs and 2 M6 plastic bolts.

2 - Chamber holder

The holder consists of following parts:

  • Transparent cover
  • Front product name plate
  • 2 chamber guiding slots with fixation bolts

3 - Multi-purpose plug-in chamber

Product Scheme

CAST

1 - Water inlet

2 - Adjustable water outlet tube

3 - Filtration ladder

4 - Closure

5 - Overflow ring

6 - Optional cascade connection

C.A.S.T is not equipped with any pump as it should be connected directly to the main tank water outlet. Water outlet tube or hose is freely inserted into the top opening of the chamber holder cover.

Inner design of C.A.S.T. chamber and filtration ladder ensures low-noise water flow. Two openings on both sides of the chamber enable two or even more chambers connection into the cascade. Cascade connection can be very useful in following cases:

  • Very high water flow rate between main tank and sump causing an overflow if only one unit is used
  • Filtrated water contains large amount of particles causing fast clogging of filtration fabric
(Highly populated fish tanks for instance)

Filtration Ladder

C.A.S.T. offers on basic level two filtration materials:

  • SF-01-500: Standard filtration fabric
    • 100% POP (Polypropylene)
    • 305 X 100 mm
    • Water flow capacity 2.000 l/h
  • FF-01-300: Fine filtration inlet-side-melted fabric
    • 100% POP (Polypropylene)
    • 305 X 100 mm
    • Water flow capacity 1.000 l/h

Filtration fabric is delivered pre-cut also as the spare parts. Both materials are fit-up and easily washable. Filtration fabric can be quickly exchanged or inserted into the chamber with the support of plastic ladder.

Optional accessories and spare parts

PAD Filtration Ladder 257

Long-life PAD fine-filtration ladder as an alternative to the standard one. High-quality polyamide sieve is used instead of fabric filtration pads.

  • Made of highly resistant polyamide fabric
  • Loop size 257 µm (~0,26 mm)
  • Water flow capacity ~ 1.500 l/h

PAD filtration ladder is extremely easy to maintain and can serve for years if not mechanically damaged.

Ladder

3+3 Filtration Pads

Set of spare filtration pads for standard filtration ladder:

  • 3x SF-01-500 (305 x 100 mm)
  • 3x FF-01-300 (305 x 100 mm)
